Thank you Comm II - 0607 for the above (both)! Very touching! :)

Thank you Comm II/III 2009-10!

Instructor Comments:

I think this is a great class...and most people not only enjoy themselves, but learn a lot. But not everybody agrees. Lots of people end up in this class quite by accident. Many of these students turn out to be great students and learn a lot in spite of being placed in the class by their counselor. If you are considering the class, read what other people have had to say. It's true, we work hard in the class...and we accomplish a lot. I think one student summed it up the best when they replied regarding the pace of the course: "Too fast for lazy students, but a nice pace."

Comments from parents and other "students":

  • I really appreciate everything you are doing for Evan.  He loves your class and has really developed an appreciation of photography.  You are to be commended for all of your efforts towards molding this communities younger generation.  There aren't very many teachers that are willing to put in the time and effort that you do. Thanks again for all that you do. Kirby
  • You just can't know how much we appreciate all the time you gave us Monday helping us with the computer. You are a good teacher. Thanks so very much. Sid & Shirley
  • Dear Mr Loker,

We had a REALLY GREAT session last night!! I wanted to thank you again for all the time and effort that you put into it. We GREATLY appreciate the lesson and all the information. I know that the kids had a really great time and got some really useful information.

    Once again, thanks.

  • Interesting Tidbit: I (Loker) receive a lot of positive feedback about your pictures on display at the mall, etc. It is a sign of the great job you all do. Last year, several of the counselors were raving about the pictures and one of them wanted to buy one of the pictures on the spot. Today, I received a phone call from a person who visited the mall this weekend. She was VERY complimentary of the awesome work...couldn't believe that you "all learned how to do that". In fact, she was so impressed with one print, that she was specifically calling to try to buy it...a print of Trequoi's. Isn't that exciting? Just this morning (06-07), I over heard a teacher walk up to the display, where another teacher was looking over the photos, and made the comment, "Aren't these wonderful". Another teacher yesterday made the comment, "This is my favorite time of year...when you put these photos on display". Today (07-08), a teacher walked into our room here just RAVING about the images...also wanting to buy some of the images. You see...the work you all do...has a lasting impact. Remember that as you go forward with your own personal photography. Take good pictures of whatever you do...you will remember fondly what you photograph.

6) The instructor stimulated interest in the course and made the course material interesting.

Respondent 11

So so

Respondent 17

occasionally

8) The instructor treats students respectfully and is fair in dealing with students.

Respondent 16

you could be a meany, mom!

Respondent 29

He lays down the law!

9) Is the pace of the course:

Respondent 8

faster than the speed of light

Respondent 9

a little too fast at times

Respondent 14

it is a little fast

Respondent 27

Fast at times, just put in the effort and you'll be able to keep up.

Respondent 28

Sometimes too fast.

Respondent 29

Too fast for lazy students, but a nice pace.

10) How would you deal with the fact that we have all levels of students in this class? (Keep in mind that we are expected to keep our students working on something at all times. Not doing something is not an option per my evaluator.)

Response

Answer

Response 2

I think having multiple levels of students is great.

Response 3

fine

Response 4

its cool i guess

Response 5

I don't like having underclassmen in the class because of their maturity level. They create problems the interrupt the rest of the class because the instructor has to deal with them and give them special attention. I realize that is a very broad and discriminating statement however for the good of those who really want to take the course (upperclassmen don't just get thrown in here) underclassmen should not be allowed.

Response 6

assign projects at the beginning of each 6 weeks and have them all due a week before grades are do. the next Monday have the new assignments out.

Response 7

At the beginning of the course you should give a minimal computer skills test to see where each student is. Then base the first few projects or computer assignments on what the students already know how to do.

Response 8

it don't bother me

Response 10

Having lots of different assignments to work on at different times.

Response 11

I like having all grade levels in the class. It made things interesting.

Response 12

I would let everyone work on whatever they need done and not worry about what everyone else is doing

Response 13

Give different projects to different levels of students.

Response 14

it gets annoying some times when u sit next to such immature people

Response 15

You just have to keep up with the kids who can't do everything that the other kids can.

Response 17

The students that participate in this class should be required to take a year of a basic computer class before becoming enrolled. This would prohibit freshman students from taking the course and also save the instructor of dealing with their immaturity.

Response 18

I think it should be separated it gets annoying with immature people

Response 19

its cool

Response 20

I wish the levels were more equal.

Response 21

I think this course should be offered to mature students (sophomores, juniors, and seniors.)

Response 22

I like that fact. I enjoy having a new group of people in this class instead of the same juniors.

Response 23

It's good that we have different levels, we need some competition. (Like Evan)

Response 25

That did not really effect me that much!

Response 26

I would have students take a test at the beginning of the year to determine their placement in the course. Then give assignments per level of experience.

Response 27

It worked out fine with me, there were people I could help out and in turn people that were able to help me. We all taught and learned from one another.

Response 28

The class shouldn't move faster or slower, but should be for only upperclassmen.

Response 29

Its great, you get to meet new people in different grade levels which allows you to know people outside of your grade level better.

Response 30

have extra assignments for those who move at a faster pace, though not merely busy work...extra credit maybe..or have alternate assignments

Response 31

I think its unfair for those who are eager to learn about photography, because those at a lower level show absolutely no interest OR respect.

Response 32

Its a good thing because the older students can be helpful to the younger students.

Response 33

I would still cover the basics. Even if it bored some kids to tears, you can never know the basics too well.

11) What are the strongest features of this course and of my teaching? In other words, what contributes most to your learning?

Response

Answer

Response 1

you knowledge and excellent teaching ability

Response 2

That you know what you are talking about, and that you take the time to go one on one with students.

Response 3

You are passionate about what you do, so that brings a strong point out a little in everything.

Response 5

The strongest feature has to be the vast wealth of knowledge that is Mr. Loker's brain. His knowledge of photography and his ability to share it makes this class worthwhile.

Response 6

the lessons on the internet are extremely useful in Photoshop. also the special topics helped a lot of us with variation.

Response 7

Your excitement and enthusiasm. Seeing you excited about teaching the class everyday makes me want to get into photography just as much as you are. You make it seem so fun and rewarding :)

Response 9

your serious, but fun way of teaching

Response 10

All your examples, different things in pieces and stuff.

Response 11

Very educational!!!

Response 12

All the examples

Response 13

The examples and the explanation.

Response 14

the projector shows us what to do

Response 15

You explain everything very well and I learned a lot about photography and computers.

Response 16

I mostly liked going out and taking pictures with the hands on activities.

Response 17

The strongest features of your course is the "hands on procedure". I have heard from plenty of students that agree with me when I say that sometimes we don't comprehend what you are talking about whenever you are explaining just a simple, easy procedure. I think that most of the time you blow everything out of proportion when you could easily make it more simpler for many of us to understand. Do you know how they have certain people that are so smart that you just don't understand their basic conversation and just want them to come "down to earth?" That is what most of us feel like, including myself, as we listen to your lectures. I guess I can narrow it down to that you could use a good dose of simplicity.

Response 18

It really gave me a love for photography and electronics

Response 19

photos

Response 20

All of the activities we do.

Response 21

The computer experiences. Photoshop

Response 22

Hands-on learning. We actually get to do the things you teach us. And you teach two ways, you show you in a lecture then one-on-one.

Response 23

I think trying to figure out programs ourselves works better than you standing up there and trying to explain them. It goes in one ear and out the other for me.

Response 24

Using the computer and SychronEyes to illustrate a point for the visual learners.

Response 25

you could say the way he uses examples and shows us what to do step by step

Response 26

Your knowledge of what you are teaching and your niceness

Response 27

The hands on and actually trying everything we learn. The different projects we do for grades motivate us to do our best and work hard.

Response 28

Going out and actually having the camera in my hands helped me to understand more about what you were talking about in class.

Response 29

Seeing examples and having the lessons, although everyone gets mad at locking the computers, its an effective way to teach.

Response 30

Working problems/situations out with my hands, kinetic work

Response 31

The strongest feature, in my opinion, is the photography part-computers don't interest me that much. Your teaching is strong in every subject discussed.

Response 32

The overhead lectures and shooting outside

Response 33

I really liked when you gave us instructions online and we figured it out ourselves but asked you if we had questions. And shooting in class.

Response 34

The strongest feature is not having to write everything down. It's so much easier to type everything down. Because for me, I type very well and it doesn't take a long time for me to type something down rather than writing it down.

12) What specific suggestions do you have for changes that I can make to improve the course, how it is taught, and/or what projects/topics are taught?

Response

Answer

Response 1

More hands on learning

Response 2

Less magazine assignments, more shootings, less stress.

Response 3

Explain the instructions a little more clear, and give a lot more encouragement.

Response 4

go slower and try to use language that the students understand better

Response 5

This course needs less behind the computer and more out in the field hands on learning.

Response 6

video should be a completely different class. photo 1 should still be required fr it though.

Response 7

In my opinion, darkroom printing should be available all year!!! I LOVE TO GO IN THE DARKROOM!! Other than that keep on doing what you are doing because its awesome.

Response 8

have everyone doing the same thing at same time

Response 9

make the photography 2 class bigger, some people want to take it but cant because there isent room, and a fine arts credit would have been nice

Response 10

Less stuff that has nothing to do with photography. :] More actual photography.

Response 11

More dark room!!!

Response 12

I think you should lock the computers less often

Response 13

Once you teach something, let us have time to try it out. Don't just keep on teaching four new things, because we will not remember any of them.

Response 14

none

Response 15

Maybe to have requirements to get into this class because some people waste their time by taking this class.

Response 16

I think this class was great the way it is now.

Response 17

The first semester, although we are learning basic photography material, should not be so boring. If in any way possible, you should try to make it a bit more interesting. A constructive activity, perhaps? This is the real reason why so many students drop the course after the first week. And for all you know, they could very well be excellent photography students who's work you will never enjoy.

Response 18

More time to shoot pictures during class

Response 19

don't talk so fast. and don't spazz out

Response 20

Faster pace.

Response 21

We need to slow down and not have so many projects due at one time.

Response 22

You do a very good job teaching this class.

Response 23

I guarantee no student will get premier next year, judging by the list. (maybe 1 or 2)

Response 24

I wouldn't change a thing!

Response 25

Slow Down a little

Response 26

I suggest keeping it the way it is.

Response 27

I like this class and cant really think on anything that might improve it.

Response 28

LESS lecture time.

Response 29

Well, i love videos, and the reason i got into photo 1 was to get into photo 2, because i LOVE MAKING VIDEOS! yeap.

Response 30

opt. dark room during 2nd semester even if it is all after school labs...less computer work/typing more projects

Response 31

I guess the only thing i can suggest is taking more pictures, the class is great as it is though!

Response 32

Give students more time to finish projects.

Response 33

Use more hands on teaching. For instance when you are giving directions on a new program, let the students work along with you instead of giving all the instructions then letting us try it.

Response 34

More outside shooting during class. It's fun! Also, a group project would be pretty cool. Because you can make photos while making new friends and such.

Some students are so excited about photography, they do stuff to spend extra time in photography.

For example, want to know what three guys look like washing my car? See the pictures below... :)
